Sewing Jeans (Kids)

I'm not all that new to sewing jeans anymore. Afterall, I sewn the Mountain View Jeans by Itch to stitch, the Kelly Jeans by Rad Patterns, both Adult jeans patterns too. So kids jeans should be easy. Right? 

Well, thankfully, it is! Small sizes are slightly harder to make cos smaller pieces of fabric are just harder to manipulate at the sewing machine but other than that, the jeans making went really smoothly! 

All it takes is proper needles (I used jeans needles (for jeans, schmetz 90/14 for construction, Topstitch schmetz 100/16 for topstitching with jeans thread which are slightly thicker than the normal thread) and going slow - take ur time!! 

I made 2 different types of jeans for my kids. There's a pull on pair with faux fly and elastic waistband for my youngest and a 'real jeans' with zipper and proper metal snaps for my eldest. Both patterns are from the very lovely pattern company Designs by Call Ajaire. They participate in Project Run and play which releases curated pattern collections for children that are really beautiful and I learnt about them when testing another pattern for them quite some time back. 

Let's talk about the first pattern here: Prancer Pull on Jeans:

As the name suggest, this is a pull on pair of jeans which is great for those that want an easy on easy off option. Both jeans pattern goes from newborn sizes to 16 year old which is perfect for us to make many many pairs for our kids as they grow up. 

I especially like that it is a pull on because it helps her with her independence phase - i want to put it on myself mummy! 

The leg on these pair of jeans is 'stove pipe' legs. There's also a skinny jeans option that comes with the pattern which of course would be more fitted but seeing as my kid is still learning to put pants on, stovepipes were my ideal choice. I love the fit on her and I think she loves it too. 

The denim I chose for her is about 450gsm stretch pink denim with a stretch of about 20%. The stretch ensures that she's comfortable wearing the jeans all day and it has enough stretch for her to run and play and jump in these too. 

I like that the pockets are a good size for her and she enjoys stuffing her little hands in the pockets all day long too. 

Making custom jeans also means that we can do whatever we want for the topstitching and of course I took the chance to play around with my sewing machine fancy stitches with a line of hearts and another 2 lines of your usual v shape. I love how the topstitching gives the jeans a professional touch. 

And for my boy, I wanted him to practice his motor skills, zipping and unzipping his jeans zippers and buttoning his jeans himself. So a pair of "real jeans" it is. 

Now, it is very very worthwhile making jeans for this little guy because as you probably can tell, he is very very slim and really tall too. It's near impossible to find retail wear jeans that would actually fit him. Most of the time, jeans that fit him in the waist will be inches too short and also too tight around the crotch. And jeans that are long enough would frequently be too big at the waist, even those with adjustable waist are too baggy for him. 

I have long given up buying jeans outside for him.. so I am more than happy to make the Bacca Bootcut jeans for this little guy. Don't get me wrong, it's still a lot of effort to make jeans for him. His waist, hips and height falls in 3 different sizes spanning more than 4 sizes apart. Blending takes a lot of effort and time and experience to get right. (Thankfully, following the instructions carefully really helps in this aspect!)

For my first attempt with the Bacca Bootcut jeans pattern, I would like to think that I did really really well don't you? The fit is a bootcut so it is slimmer at the knee then flares out just a touch at the bottom. I happen to think that this is a very flattering cut on my boy - he looks even taller than he is! 

While I technically could use jeans buttons for him, I decided that he is better off using metal snap buttons which I installed with a hammer and anvil. I also happen to like how the metal snaps look with the almost black denim. and I used proper metal jeans zipper also for a professional look - you really can't tell that this is mum made! 

For the topstitching on his backpockets, I went for his initials since it is so custom-made, I doubt I could pass it down to anyone's kid once he is done with them - I don't know anyone else with kids so tall and slim! Again, I went with stretch denim with about 20% stretch but this one is slightly lighter in gsm - probably closer to 400gsm. 

Comfort level 100% 💗

I really do enjoy the fact that I can sew my kids clothes that fit them perfectly and they look really good as a result. It also builds their confidence up knowing that their clothes fit properly and they are not too thin or too tall but just right.

Depending on your kids, you can chose either the Prancer pull on or the Bacca Bootcut and you know you are going to get really good professional finishes either way. 

The waistbands and finishes of both patterns are interchangeable which means if you like the fit of the stovepipe (Prancer) but also want proper zipper fly (Bacca), it is really easy to switch it up! Just get both pattern and use the relevant pieces! In fact, the bundle is on sale now so it is really worth it!

Candy Castle Bubblegum Dress and the add ons!

I got to try making the Bubblegum dress from Candy Castle Pattern Co as a brand ambassador for them and it is the pattern of the month this August with the code AUGUST. It is a beautiful wrap dress that can be made with woven and knit fabrics. So versatile!

For this dress I made, I decided to go with the Sarah Jane fabric that I have been saving. This is Children at play and its coordinate fabric with balloons. It's adorable!

The puff sleeves are done with elastic and I suppose if u pull it tighter, it will be closer to the arm but I am happy that it is slightly puffed out so that her upper arms are not "squeezed" - she really doesn't like it when her arms have elastics around them too. So this is great - a puff look without the tightness around the upper arm!

The great thing about a wrap dress is that the kid can wear it for much longer despite that fact that you make it in woven fabric. Cos this little girl has plenty of pretty woven dresses and one thing that bugs me is how fast she outgrows them. Woven clothes don't get worn as much and she outgrows them so much faster too. So it's a nice change that this is a lovely woven dress that she isn't going to outgrow just yet. 

This version is the basic bubblegum dress with an A line skirt that is sweet and simple and really fast to make. 

The recommended fabrics for this in woven include quilter's cotton (which is what i have here, corduroy for something thicker to wear over long sleeves (think winter wear coordinates!) or even light weight denim. For knit fabrics, u can go with interlock or jersey (size down for really stretchy fabric!) and even fleece (again for a cute cold weather coordinate!)

The dress itself can be lined on the bodice or it can also be finished with bias tape all around the wrap. This version I made was lined. 

New information! (added 17/3/2022)

If u like a really poofy swing dress, I tried the bubblegum swing dress add on which is a gathered, full skirt version with a contrast band (Can u see that the bottom of her pretty Hello Kitty dress is in black coordinating Hello Kitty kimono print?)

There's a lot of things I did for this dress to make it "special". Firstly, I picked the bias tape version this time so that it is not so hot to wear - previously the white was slightly translucent hence the need for lining but this fabric is perfectly fine to wear as a single layer. 

Then to add interest to the bias tape and make it uniquely ours, I used 2 different colors of bias tape in 2 different width. The purple is a beautiful dark purple with sheen satin bias that is a double fold 1cm bias while the pink is a cotton bias tape that folds up to about 0.5cm in width. I binded one side of the purple bias then used the combined bias to give the dress a contrast bias collar look. It turned out exactly as I envisioned. I was SO PROUD. The sleeves had just the pink bias and the straps were just the purple one. I think it looks perfect! 

You may be wondering. Where's the puff sleeves? Well, for the sleeveless look, I also used the Bubblegum parade maxi dress sleeveless add on. Hehe. Talk about mixing and mashing! There was so much going on in this dress already that I didn't want puff sleeves to distract from the other stuff like contrast collar. So going sleeveless was perfect. It was also ideal since this girl runs hot! 

Winter Wear Designs Ma Cherie Top and Stargazer Shorts

Hello again for the Hello Summer Kids Blog tour for Winter Wear Designs. This is Day 3 and I'm here again with 2 kids pattern sews from Winter Wear Designs, this time for my little girl 💓

I've always wanted to make a cute hanbok inspired top for my little girl and the only pattern I had was for knits. But I finally found one that isn't for knits! 

Ma Cherie is a super cute V neck tunic top that has pleated skirts. I made my girl's version with a solid color Kona Cotton from 2quilters and Kobayashi Colorful Dots in double gauze from Nekoneko. 

Doesn't she look adorable? I think this one is a keeper! In fact, I may hack this to be longer so she can wear it as a cute maxi! But since this is a tunic, I needed to match it with a super cute pair of shorts too. And the Stargazer bubble shorts is perfect! 

And as with all her new shorts, the first thing she checked was whether there was any pockets. 

I'm pleased to say that she is pretty happy with her new bubble shorts with the roomy roomy pockets. I made it just slightly bigger so that she can wear this longer and I think she will wear this pretty often too!

Sunflower Seams Lokelani Romper!

Summer Days are the best for Rompers! And since it's summer all year round here, this little one practically lives in rompers. We are always on the lookout for rompers and this is one of the winners in our books! 

This is Lokelani from Sunflower Seams Pattern Co. I made this version out of cotton lycra for the main fabric and DBP scraps for the straps. I just love how it all came together and the very fact that i was able to find scraps that matched the main fabric perfectly was just icing on the cake! 

This is the shorts length but there's also a capri length for those who prefer the knees covered. In fact, I may make some in capri length for when she goes to playgrounds so that there's less chance of her scraping her knees. As we all know, toddlers tend to fall and scrap their knees quite a bit! =p

Here's a closeup of her in her Lokelani. The straps are slightly thicker here than the final version - the final version straps look nicer cos it's thinner but i find this version cute too. 

I think I will be making more of these soon. Though I may skip the middle tie straps since the negative ease is enough to keep the romper up as is! 

S.U.A.T Titania and Pixie Tank and dress

It's time for another Stitch upon a time Pattern Showcase / Sale!

This time round, we have a wonderful summer staple - Titania Top and Tunic and Pixie top and dress!

It's SO SO cute!

 

I love the razor back. It feels so athletic! And I know what you are thinking - what about the bra? Well, this pattern comes with an inner built in bra! I made mine with it so I can skip the strapless bras which we all know isn't comfy nor that secure! 

I made mine as a top length so that I can squeeze both my top and my girl's dress out of a yard of fabric. And I think I still have enough remnants for something else for her!

Here's my girl in her Pixie dress. She looks adorable if I may say so myself hehe. I love the flare of the dress and there's also a slightly less flared version. 

The dress came together really quickly because there isn't any gathering. And the only band is the neckband. The armscye is done by hemming - set up your twin needles or coverstitch cos there's quite some hemming to do! hehe. But trust me, it's worth it!!

Peekaboo Peyton Cocoon Cardigan

While Singapore's weather is mostly really hot and "summery", whenever we go indoors to shopping malls or libraries, the air conditioning is usually really cold. 

I wanted to make my girl a cardigan for some time now. To keep her warm when we go indoors. 

I finally settled on a quick sew - the Peekaboo Peyton Cocoon Cardigan. 

I made this with vintage knit fabric with little stretch. It turned out really cute! 

I liked how everything came together and it helps that this is such a fast sew too. I could cut it out with the projector and sew it up during her nap time, and have her wear it on a trip to the library when she woke. Yay for fast sews!

Do you like the silhouette of the cardi? I kinda want one for myself too! 

Eunoia Design Group Kaleo

Eunoia's Kaleo has just been updated! It now has more sizes, better fit, pockets, a new puddle jumper length (not floor length but slightly above ankle) etc etc and it also has projector file!! YIPPEE!

I love how elegant it looks! And it's just a really beautiful top and skirt combo. 

I made ours in puddle jumper length because this toddler isn't exactly very good at climbing steps while wearing maxi skirts. This length is perfect for her. It's long enough to keep her legs covered yet give her plenty of ease to move around and jump. 

The top has a high neckline in front and a lower one at the back, but i have seen others wearing it on their little ones the other way round without any problems!

And because it is lined, the dress has no bands - which makes for a lovely silhouette!

Did I mention it has pockets? 💗

Simple Life Pattern Co Kinsley Cascading Flounce Dress

For Chinese New Year in 2021, I made a cheongsam inspired princessy brocade dress for my darling using a hacked SLPco pattern - Kinsley Cascading flounce dress.

It addressed all the common issues I have with traditional cheongsams for children - restricting high necks (most kids hate it) and too tight (cheongsams tend to be more figure hugging, but toddlers needs room!)

Kinsley was chosen cos it was loose fitting and i loved the silhouette!

The hack takes a bit of effort to do but the result is so satisfying! If you like the hack and would like to try it yourself, I'll be super happy to see your version!

S.U.A.T Archer and Artemis Tank

It's SUMMER all year round in Singapore so tanks are always a favorite of the kids. I had the chance to make 2 different tank patterns from Stitch upon a time for my little ones to twin and I'm so happy that they look so good in them! 

My boy is modelling the Archer Tank which is a unisex racerback tank that is incredibly fast to sew. In fact, it is so so fast that he already has 3 such tanks in rotation in his wardrobe! My girl's modelling the Artemis Girls Top and Dress which is a racerback that can be a cute tank or a circle skirted dress. Both tops are made with Cotton Lycra from Spotlight. 

The racerback Archer tank is a lovely quick sew. You can see from the photo that the armhole fits quite well - you have to grade properly though! For example, my boy is stick thin (We DO feed him!! It's genes lol) so his chest is 3T while his height is 6T. I had to grade it according to the instructions in order for the tank to fit nicely - so please don't skip grading!

The Artemis top has a super cute feature behind:

I love it! The gathered back made the outfit really adorable (Quick note: I graded the top to be a little longer than is necessary cos she likes the armscye of her tank tops lower but if u did the tank according to instructions, the armscye doesn't go so low!)
